R.I.P Gar Carey

Everyone at Greenhills AFC is deeply saddened at the passing of Garrett (Gar) Carey who was a former player, manager , committee member , sponsor but most of all a good friend to everyone at the club.

The Greenhills AFC family wish to pay their sincere condolences to Kelley , his 3 children Sam, Max and Grace, and all the Carey family on the passing of Garrett . Garrett was a huge part of this great club and wider community, he had a massive circle of friends and one of the funniest lads you could ever come across.

He started with Greenhills Boys Football Club as a young schoolboy and he played for many years in the colours of Greenhills, including many successful trips away to USA and Germany. Gar and his manager Mr Paddy Weldon became a double act around the club and in future years became great friends. He became manager to his eldest son Sam starting off his schoolboy journey with the club and was part of a successful trip to Wales in 2016. During his time with the club he also became a valued committee member. Outside of his football commitments Gar was also the club mechanic helping out with repairing the various tractors so we could keep the pitches to a high standard. Another role he had was Club Chef at our annual BBQ and he somehow managed to create more smoke than a burning building. (but as Gar would say himself “The burgers are gorgeous”)

Gar’s two sons Sam & Max played for the club and this season his son Max captained our U13B league winning team. Garrett (GC Auto’s) sponsors the club which showed his commitment to the club over the years .

Garrett (Gar), you will be sadly and deeply missed by everyone at the club , but also around the community as your smile , craic/jokes , positivity was a shinning light.

May Garrett rest in peace and mind over his family.

30th Anniversary for our team from 1991

A 30th anniversary reunion of the Greenhills Boys team founded in 1991 took place last weekend in Roadstone with a match between a Greenhills Selection and Carraig Rovers. The team, which started at U9 level, continued until U16 level with many memorable moments over the years, including the Greenhills Boys trip to the USA in 1994.

Presentations were made to managers John Mullen and John Milne, who also played in the game.

The Greenhills Selection featured a mix of original players alongside team-mates from over the years at Greenhills Boys and Cherryfield United. They ran out 6-2 winners with a number of ‘reeling in the years’ performances from the boys in green.

Thanks to Conor Fitzgerald, Cormac Kerins, Elaine Murphy, Ian Higginbotham, Sean McGovern, Ger Looney, Martin Finn, Peter Murphy and all at Carraig Rovers for their involvement.

Greenhills team: Richard Leonard, Stephen O’Brien, Niall Doherty, Padraigh Griffin, Dermot Looney, Aaron Smyth, John McCormack (c), Craig Byrne, John Mullen, John Milne, Paul Foley, Evan Griffin, Eoin Keating, Stuey White, Seán Kane.

This information was put together by ex player and friend of the club Dermot Looney. Well done Dermot.
